33 months jail time in Betonsports case

In one of the most infamous online gaming cases in history, David Carruthers, the former CEO of betOnSports, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for his role in running an illegal gambling operation. He pleaded guilty to racketeering charges stemming from his operation of the popular online sports book.

According to the original article that appeared in Business Week, Carruthers was not the only high-ranking member convicted in the BetOnSports case. Founder Gary Kaplan pleaded guilty to RICO violations and received 48 months in prison to go along with a $43 million fine. Additionally, Neil Scott Kaplan, Lori Kaplan-Multz, and Penelope Tucker all pleaded guilty and had money in Swiss accounts confiscated.

BetOnSports allegedly made over $1 billion in 2004 alone, and the company is currently traded on the London Stock Exchange.
